Review of the Strathcona Hotel Victoria
Apr 15, 2011
We were very pleased with the service at the hotel, its
location and the continental breakfast. I did hear
comments from people with rooms at the front of the
hotel that there was too much noise at night from
surrounding clubs but rooms in the back are not affected
by the noise so I would request one if noise if a
problem for you.
Area recommendations
Victoria--everywhere is great to visit. I have been
there too many times to count and still find more to see
and do

This was my third time staying in Victoria, for the
Victoria Marathon weekend.
I got the promo "stay for 3 nights and pay for 2", I am
a student and wanted to keep my costs down so this was
perfect for me.
I also wanted something that was centrally located and
this sure is!
THE PROS
* location
*Central to everything
THE CONS
* Noise levels were high even though we were on the
"quiet" side of the building
* the room was SUPER small.
* The bathtub was slanted and not level
* Can hear everything the next room does, including a
book dropping.
* Widows did not open enough
* Poor view
* Had to pay for parking
* No fridge!
Alll and all I got what I paid for the rooms were clean
the staff were friendly but the rooms were small and did
not induce a "romantic" feeling into the room.
lol
If you want something that is central, cheap then this
is for you.

Booked an $89 premium queen room directly with the
hotel. It included a $20 “Sticky Wicket” restaurant
voucher, and all rooms include a continental breakfast.
The location is 2 blocks from the downtown harbour.
Having it's own pub means you don't have to walk for a
place to party.
Other reviews mention the noise problems, so I asked for
a quiet room when booking. I was booked into room 500,
on the top (5th) floor. I didn't hear pub/bar noise or
street noise. Unfortunately, the rooms have thin walls,
I could hear my neighbors talking and people in the
hallway.
The room was comfortable, probably about 200sq.ft, and
had a TV, telephone, couch, coffee and dinner tables.
The bathroom had a shower over bath. The window has a
view of a building rooftop – the quieter side of the
building I would say.
Other reviewers seem to have exaggerated the parking I
feel. I counted in my head an entire 45 seconds, while
walking from my parked car to the lobby. For some
reason, I didn't have to pay for this either.
All in all, I highly recommend to anyone staying in
Victoria and really wants to see it's downtown. I
wouldn't recommend to light sleepers, or those who don't
want to hear conversations or otherwise, from the
neighboring room.

I got an excellent deal for a 2 night stay through
Booking.com over Halloween. I highly recommend using the
website since even the hotel itself couldn't give the
same deal. I stayed on the 4th floor overlooking the
volleyball court and I had no trouble with any partying
noise. (A rainy Halloween also probably helped)
The room itself was fairly small but the high ceiling
and tall windows kept it from feeling cramped. Bathroom
amenities were a soap dispenser by the sink and
shampoo/shower gel dispenser in the tub. (kind of
smelled like men's cologne) Decor was nice, and there
was a full length mirror as well. Well stocked liquor
store right beside the hotel, where you may obtain free
ice for your room. I also found the bed very
comfortable. Parking is $10 a day paid to the hotel upon
check in. The lot is monitored but make sure you clear
EVERYTHING out of your car since people WILL break in
even for coins.
My only beefs would be:
-upon check in I found the housekeeping kind of sloppy
in places.
- no one sits at the front desk so you have to wait for
them to come out from the back.
-front lobby seems kind of old. Scratched up front door
with an emergency escape-bar for a door handle(?)
-no small fridge inside room.
-no alarm clock (or clock of any kind)
None of those were a big deal to me since you can't beat
the location. A good deal, a decent room and walking
distance to everywhere makes for a good stay.
***Also check out Pig BBQ restaurant on the outside of
the new Atrium on Blanshard. I got take-out from there
and it was great!
