Hotel Review of the Fairmont Empress Hotel Victoria

Oh, Victoria BC. What a place! Definitely one day when I meet this rich guy who
is going to totally fall in love with me, I’m moving to Victoria and this is
where I want to retire.

By the way, the location, while prominent, is not ideal. It is quite far from
restaurants and shops. One would be much better off to choose a decent hotel
several blocks north or south of Fairmont Empress, because that is where you can
easily walk to many shops and restaurants.

It's a grand old one, full of tradition, and crowded when we stayed there in the
height of the tourist season. It sits majestically looking over the harbor. The
rooms are small, though, befitting an older hotel, but comfortable.

Imposing edifice supremely located overlooking Victoria harbour. We stayed on
the gold level in a grand room with a harbour view. Staff, especially
concierges, were wonderful and dining was gracious and enjoyable. A good sense
of direction was required as the many additions over the years have led to the
internal wings being a bit of a maze. Within easy walking distance of most
attractions in Victoria, including sea plane terminal, museum, harbour&whale
watching cruises and downtown shopping. Most enjoyable.

The Empress is an icon, and deservedly so. Old but with class, it's a pleasant
if unspectacular place to stay, but its stature in Victoria makes it worth a go.
Rooms are smallish--no surprise--but comfortable, and the staff were
surprisingly without pretence, and quite helpful. I thought the hotel's
Indian-themed buffet was a bit over-priced for the quality, but could not
complain about the setting, which is of the English-Raj variety. You certainly
can't beat the location, which is perfect for all of downtown Victoria and its
innumerable restaurants. Not sure it's worth top-dollar, but if you can get a
decent deal (like we did), it's a nice choice. We'd definitely stay again. And
if you're on your way to Butchart Gardens, cheap public bus transport is only a
block away--as long as you leave at the right time, that is. Just ask someone,
and you'll save some money, and get a nice look at the greater Victoria area on
the way out to the Gardens.

Impeccable service. Impeccable cleanliness. Impeccable Food. Highest quality.
One of the best of the best. Make sure you go to high tea in the afternoon and
try the signature cocktail in the lounge "The Empress". Great location at harbor
and in walking distance to the entire town.

I had a wonderful stay at the Empress. Never slept better. The location was
wonderful - close to downtown businesses and easy to take a nice jog to Beacon
Hill Park at the waterfront. The hotel itself is beautiful.
We didn't take advantage of the restaurants, the spa or tea.
I was displeased at the rate of $30/night for parking, but our internet was
free. Next time, we'll come without the car.

There is no ac and found that it needed fixing eg. wall paper lifting off of
wall. Rooms are very small. Beds are nice but for the price, better to stay
somewhere else. Not as fancy as the Chateaux at Lake Louise or the Banff Spring.

It's an experience to visit the Empress and I'd say a must see while visiting
Victoria, but this was my first time staying at the hotel. Although a Fairmont
property, the rooms are very old, with old furniture, etc. It obviously keeps
with the theme but I enjoy a more modern hotel with all the "cool" amenities.
This hotel is very old fashion.
Room Tip: The hotel has lots of corners so views are often hit or miss, request
a view at check in if interested. |
