Review of the Royal Scot Suite Hotel Victoria

Came back after several years and were delighted to find
the same excellent service and updated room
decor--including large screen TV, new carpet and better
furniture. Still the same great location for walking to
major sights in Victoria. Staff was very, very helpful
with everything. The concierge/travel advisor was one of
the best we've encountered in Canada. The hotel has an
ATM machine ($2.95 CAD charge) so very convenient for
cash. Just a tip on the parking charge. At the time of
our visit, there was NO CHARGE if you have a rental car
from Budget. Otherwise it's about $10 CAD per day. Be
sure to ask about it.

This hotel has a great staff , right from reservations,
front desk ,housekeeping, to the shuttle driver who will
take you around downtown. No attitude from anyone. Where
did they find such people. This is a great place to stay
and I am going back again in September. I have stayed at
several other hotels in B.C. but keep coming back to
this one.

We made several stops in British Columbia, but I enjoyed
Victoria the most. The Royal Scot is an older hotel, and
as we learned, very popular with an older clientele.
Upon check in we were upgraded to a suite, and although
we didn't need the full kitchen (with an OVEN!) it is
good to know for future reference. As other reviews
note, no air conditioning, and we were there on a couple
of warm (80's) days, top floor, but there were 2 fans in
the suite, we opened the windows for awhile at dusk, and
felt fine. I titled this "quirky" as there were some
unusual, and downright odd things about the hotel, but
overall I liked the character of the place. In addition
to the pool/whirlpool/exercise area, there was a
billiard room, with a shuffleboard table also. How fun
to play pool without having to be in a noisy bar! There
was also a game room with puzzles and board games, had
we been staying longer or had poor weather we might have
enjoyed this over TV. The kilted bear out front is great
for kitchy pictures as you walk from the hotel to
everything! The location is great, one block over from
the waterfront, so the street was quiet. We parked the
car when we got there and didn't use it at all for
sightseeing. The oddest thing was the layout of our
suite. There was a kitchen/eating area, with a note
pointing out the place settings for 4 in the cupboards.
But there were only chairs for 3. The living space held
a sofa/hide-a-bed, TV, 2 comfortable chairs & end tables
all as expected, in addition to...........a queen bed(?)
There was enough room to walk between the bed and the
sofa, but the layout would not have allowed for the
hide-a-bed to have been opened. And the TV was placed
such that one would have to be on the bed to watch it,
as you could not see it from the sofa, and the chairs
were pointed perpendicular to it. Note that this was not
actually the bedroom, there was a separate bedroom, then
a nicely appointed bath (and I LOVED the spice scented
soap!!!) but seemed as though you might expect to sleep
up to 6 (if you could open the sofa bed) although only 3
could eat together at a time, and anyone sleeping in the
sitting room would have to walk thru the bedroom to get
to the bath. We actually got the giggles trying to
figure out what on earth the intent of the layout was,
but decided the hotel just needed to store an extra
queen bed somewhere. Overall we had a lovely 2 nights
there, and I would stay again.

Located one block from Victoria's Inner Harbor, the
Royal Scot was a perfectly adequate place to stay. Our 1
bedroom suite was very roomy, clean and quiet. The staff
was efficient and helpful. And you really are just steps
from the harbor, the Royal BC Museum and high tea at the
Empress. For the modest price of $154/night during peak
season we felt it was a great value as well as a very
convenient place to stay. |
