Review of the Queen Victoria Hotel
17 September 2011
I stayed at this hotel for 3 stays during the month of August. Prior to staying at the QV I was at another property very close by and left Victoria on my return I booked the QV was very happy overall and used it for 2 more stays, 1 close in time the other later mid August to labor day weekend.
The first room I got was on the 7th floor at the rear, which was very quiet, however the room had not been renovated yet as they seem to be gradually doing. The queen size bed was some what uncomfortable. I decided to stay longer at this hotel and a room change was required. I was put in a room with a large comfortable king size bed and wonderful view of inner harbour etc, If forget the floor number, I was satisfied with shower and tub lots of hot water. The in room safe was nice and although there was no kitchen both of these rooms had had a small fridge. A stay a few days later I was upgraded to room with 2 queen size beds room was the larger parking area but being on the forth floor is was very quiet and enjoyable. My stay in late August was in a room similar to the first stay but it had been renovated 6th floor at the back. The view was of Beacon Hill Park. It was a small room but very comfortable and enjoyable. I notice that the walls seem fairly solid in this hotel compared to others I have stayed in. I spent a total of about 11 nights here in August and have nothing to major to complain about. Staff was excellent, I slept well all night I was there being a light sleeper this is tough in some hotels. Location of property is excellent. I guess some things such as bedding sheets and duvets could be of better quality and improved speed on the WIFI would be nice but for the price this hotel is wonderful. It is not a Westin or Marriot, but it has so much going for it, and you don't pay the high price of those place neither. I did think the Restaurant was okay but not great but that is another business. Beds in all rooms but the first one were good, I guess during renos the beds are being changed. The elevators are slow and small but one can always use the stairs. If you want an affordable place where staff tries very hard to make everything right than you won't be disappointed at QV. One more point my last stay I was awakened to a power outage in Victoria the night clerk without my asking arrived within 5 minutes of my wake up call with a large flash light. I want to thank all of you at QV for helping make my vacations this summer comfortable and I look forward to coming back soon!

Review of the Queen Victoria Hotel

My husband and I travelled through SW Canada for 3 weeks and stayed in 7 hotels in comparable price range to the Queen Victoria Hotel and Suites. This hotel provided our least comfortable or welcoming stay.
Mattress was so hard it was like sleeping on an ironing board. After a couple of nights we complained and they did supply us with a mattress topper. It seems other guests have made a similar complaint. Pillows were very 'solid' too. We asked housekeeping for a softer pillow but they hadn't any other type. Wi-fi connection in the room did not work although it was advertised as free access. Our first cup of tea and coffee in the room was complementary, thereafter, a tea bag or coffee pack was $2 and had to be collected from the front desk....I think that's just mean! The kitchen facility was behind a locked door in the room. The key for the lock was available at the cost of $20 per night. This cost might be acceptable for a family but, when there are only 2 guests in the room, this is an uneconomic option. It made more sense in money terms to eat out, although we would have appreciated the flexibility. Most of the other hotels we stayed in had free access to the kitchen facility in the room. The shower was good when you got in initially but mid way through the water became cold and then a few seconds later too hot. We also heard when other guests used their shower or bathroom sink. The first time we heard the noise it sounded like the worst rain storm you could ever imagine. The uncomfortable beds are a major issue in the hotel because that is the very core purpose of their business, namely, a comfortable nights sleep. The other things are not major issues when considered individually but collectively they add up to a less than satisfying experience.
The Hotel is in a great location but should not trade on the strength of that fact. There is a lot of competition out there and owners need to spend a little more money on ensuring quality as well as investing a little more generosity and effort in customer care before we consider the Queen Victoria Hotel alongside the best of the rest.
