Review of the Strathcona Hotel Victoria
7 September 2011
You can't have it all. Stayed two nights at the
Strathcona and had a fantastic time, but warned in
advance about the noise and asked for room AWAY from
Surf Club (Rooftop meatmarket/bar/volleyball) which is
adjacent to hotel. Rooms are clean and Strathcona is
amazing property with nine bars (all different themes)
and historically old. Breakfast very good and friendly
staff. Very close to wharf, attractions and good
restaurants.

A great location right on Douglas st, close to the port
and all things walkable in Victoria.
Hotel staff were friendly and accommodating.
Adjoining hotels were the opposite, indifferent and
generally unhelpful.
Parking was a great feature, close and relatively cheap
Excellent safe bike storage lockers, although not on
site, yet close

The room was so Small! Very old, stinky and hot. There
is no A/C and our room was facing Douglas Street so at
night if the window was open (only 4") or not the street
noise was a problem as there are bars/pub under you. If
the window was open, cig. smoke would come in the room
from the street. The bathroom needs to be re-done. The
tile is black from mildew/mold, cracking and just looks
dirty. When taking a shower, you will receive cold to
hot flashes of water. Temp is not consistent. The
breakfast was not super. Considering all the great fruit
that is available this time of the year there were only
oranges and apples. Other selections were not that
great. The staff at breakfast were not very friendly.
The front desk staff were VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL.
There is no parking at the hotel. It's on the next
block, up the street. After a long/busy day it's
important to have a restful sleep.

My partner and I decided to have a long weekend away
from home and traveled to Victoria BC via Port Angeles
Wa and the BlackBall Ferry.
We paid $159.00 for one night at the Strathcona. The
entire staff from beginning to end were very nice. The
rooms on the other hand are horrible. The carpeting is
old, the paint is old, the furniture is old, everything
just looked tired. Our room must have been 150 square
ft, queen bed, no kings, no air conditioning (and my god
it was hot in the room), no phone, no ice machine. There
was just nothing that warranted $159.00 per night. If
the room had been $79.00 I'd have been happy. I'm happy
with the simplest of accommodations, but for $159.00 I
expect more.

I booked this room because I was trying to go cheap, and
it was best value for two queen beds and had breakfast
included.
So I go there and I say - ok, I'm here to check in, and
they say: ok, your room with a queen bed and a couch is
ready for you. I say - no no no, I booked a room with
two queen beds. They say: no you didn't. I pull up my
confirmation email on my phone and it says: two queen
beds. They look at it and say: well, our computer says
one queen bed and one couch. But we can put you in a two
queen bed room if you pay an extra $20 or $30
?????
For breakfast they served the worst muffins I've ever
had - they were sticky and weird, and I found a piece of
plastic in mine. They also served really bad bread and
bagels that looked like they just pulled them out of the
freezer. And that was it.
The place also smells pretty bad. I wouldn't have minded
the ghetto-e-ness, if I didn't have to sleep on a couch,
after paying for a bed.
