Hotel Review of the Laurel Point Inn Victoria
27 November 2011
This is my second stay and it is only okay. The location is beautiful right on the Inner Harbour and even one of the basic rooms had a great view. It appears they have tried to update the rooms with new bed skirts and covers but the furniture is dated and very worn. The climate control is an old unit-style and is very loud and unpleasant to have on when in the room; this made the temperature and air uncomfortable.

The room was clean and the Aveda products are appreciated but there are no other details to speak of.

While sitting in the lobby area waiting for someone a cockroach was on my purse; I was not sure if it came from outside or inside the hotel...

The restaurant Aura was overpriced and the service was terrible. At 4p in the afternoon it seemed we were inconveniencing the staff by ordering yet there was only one other couple there.

Overall it is good value for your money if you want basic accommodations. I would recommend staying downtown.

Our first stay at the Laurel Point and we were impressed. We had the pleasure of staying in one of the 6th floor Terraced Suite rooms - the Honeymoon Suite to be exact - and the views were amazing. The Suite was very spacious with the living room separated from the bed/bath area by a long hallway. The 2-person Jacuzzi tub was set apart and has panoramic views of the harbour. The room was very quiet and the bed comfortable. The outdoor terrace runs the length of the suite and in the summer would be one of the best features of this room - furnished with nice patio furniture and views of the harbour over to Fisherman's Wharf. The location of the Inn at Laurel Point is fabulous with downtown a short walk away and the start of the scenic waterfront walk at the doorstep. We would stay here again and would recommend this hotel to others.

I want to like this hotel. My wife and I came here 10 years ago and it was quiet and quaint so we wanted to try it again. Things are different now as are my expectations, and they are not that high.

First there's the poor internet connectivity. Either offer a connection that works or don't offer one at all. Most times it was unusable in my room. Perhaps it was the business convention going on downstairs that was using the connection? When I mentioned (had to wait and wait to ask a question) to the front desk, they didn't seem too concerned. It seemed as if the staff was concentrating more on the convention than the hotel guests. I am not impressed.

Next there is a simple thing of coffee. This hotel has a gorgeous view and it's something that wants to be appreciated with a cup of good coffee in the morning. Nope. Here are the choices. Walk down the path to a coffee shop at a DIFFERENT hotel, make the bad coffee in your room, or pay extreme prices to have it delivered via room service, or have it in their Aura restaurant. Did I mention I wanted to have it on the nice deck I payed for? This is so very annoying. I'd probably pay the extreme prices at Aura if I could take a PORCELAIN cup to my room but I guess guests can't be trusted with glassware? I don't want a paper cup. Thanks though. When I was discussing this with the host at the front of the Aura restaurant, she dismissed my concern as though it was unimportant. I was not being unpleasant. Finally I decided to make the coffee in the room with the little brewer provided. It was dirty from previous use. Wow. This is unacceptable at these room prices.

Next. Body shampoo in a bottle is NOT soap and harder than heck to wash with. Enough said.

Prices! I ordered a 2 ounce glass of Jameson and had it delivered to the room and it was almost $16! I understand a mark up, but this is just absolutely ridiculous.

As I said, I really want to like this hotel so much but I can't. When you are traveling, it's the simple things that matter. I like a hotel that offers luxury but also gives me an opportunity to do things myself...like take a simple cup of coffee up to my room. We won't be back.
