Guest Review of the Dalton Hotel & Suites
August 28, 2011
We stayed here with our 2 children aged 4 & 5. The room it self was cozy and
fairly clean. The bests were comfortable and the continental breakfast was
average, a fair amount of choices and lots of seating.
We did have a strange experience though, we ended up going down a staircase and
ended up in construction on the first floor. When we first entered the stairwell
with kind of thought it didn't look right but there was no signs telling us not
to go down it so we went. We did end up going back up the stairs to the 2nd
floor and found the elevator.
We did like the feeling of the hotel, being built so long ago. They do need to
update the room we stayed in though, lots of holes in the walls that had been
filled and a big one on the door.
I would rate this overall as average, if the price was closer the $100 a night
range I would have been for satisfied, we paid close to $150.Guest Review of the Dalton Hotel & Suites

The one factor which pushed me to rate Dalton 'Very Good' rather than just
'Average' is their staff. The staff was extremely friendly and pleasant. They
went out of their way to make sure I enjoyed my stay in Victoria. Everything
from tips on what sites to see when, making change for bus fare, or just
friendly chatting in the breakfast room.
The hotel is a historic hotel, which I find charming, but be prepared for what
else that means. The rooms are not as sound-proofed as more modern hotels. Some
of the decor has not been updated. The furniture in the rooms is pretty rickety
and there was not much of a dresser to put clothes in, so if you are the type
who likes to unpack into dressers, you will be out of luck. For me, all I care
about is a comfy bed and pillow, which I had. This isn't really the type of
hotel you would relax in during the day, it's the type you choose when you are
going to be gone all day and need a comfy place to crash when you get back. I
think the room could have been a little cleaner. It wasn't enough to complain
about, but the bathroom floor needed to be swept more thoroughly and the sink
taps looked a little grungy around their bases.
The location is excellent, we were able to walk everywhere, so we didn't need a
rental car. It's not as close to the harbour as other hotels, but it is also
much less expensive if you book through expedia. Weekends had a fair bit of
street noise, but I suspect that is the case with all the downtown hotels. If
you want to be somewhere quieter, try booking somewhere near Quebec street.
The free breakfast was pretty standard except for the make-your-own-waffles,
which everyone seemed to enjoy, although I am somewhat of a waffle "connoisseur"
so I don't care for waffle batter that comes in a machine. I would have liked to
see some more variety in fruit and muffins. There were only apples and oranges
and your choice of two different muffins. I would also like to see a different
brand of tea, the one they have looks fancy, but it is poor quality.
Hopefully this review helps you make your decision. I am very observant and
critical, but overall I think I would stay at the Dalton again. I think it is a
great option for young travellers trying to save some money, or anyone who
values great hotel staff.

What I liked about this hotel is that it is more than 100 years old. That is one
of the reasons I enjoy Victoria with all their heritage building and
architecture. Breakfast was okay and staff was friendly and ready to help
anytime. One suggestion to management is that they should fix pipes installed
for watering window planters. Will stay at Dalton again.

my wife and i stayed at the Dalton for four days in a standard room. we found
the rooms very clean and comfortable and the staff very helpful and freindly. we
also knew it was a heritage hotel which has loads of character and charm. the
breakfast is free and goes well beyond most continental breakfasts. check in was
a hoot because expedia got my name wrong on their contact sheet but that was
easily figured out and remedied. that's the loved part, now to the hate part the
hotel parking lot is spaced for about ten to twelve cars the spaces are way too
tight and they should loose about two to make wider stalls . i parked for four
days and was bumper hit three times got some painting to do ob my bumper an door
dings. i drive a mini van not something huge. but that being said the hotel was
very nice and i would book again
