The
Seattle SuperSonics joined the NBA for the 1967-68 season, and have played at
the Seattle Center through most of that span. Since 1995-96, the Sonics have
played at the 17,072-seat Key Arena, a renovated version of the original Seattle
Center Coliseum.
The Sonics have been one of the NBA's most successful teams over their
history. In 1978-79, they claimed their first NBA Championship over the
Washington Bullets, to whom they had lost in the NBA Finals the previous season.
Since joining the NBA for the 1967-68 season, the Sonics have had many
highlights in their history, including consecutive trips to the NBA Finals in
1978 and 1979 (culminating the second time in their first NBA Championship),
four division titles in five years in the 1990s and a return to the 1996 NBA
Finals, and 2004-05's Northwest Division Championship.
Their names are synomymous with the Sonics. Three members of the Sonics 1979
championship team, five All-Stars and a player who earned the moniker "Mr.
Sonic", Fred Brown (32), Nate McMillan (10), Jack Sikma (43), Lenny Wilkens
(19), Gus Williams (1) and Spencer Haywood (24) have etched their names in the
Sonics' history book and earned a permanent home for their jerseys in the
KeyArena rafters.
