Seattle's
new ballpark for the Mariners was
built to resemble the great ballparks of yesteryear. It is open-air and has real
grass. It also features a retractable roof that covers the ballpark, but does
not enclose it. Since the Inaugural Game on July 15, 1999, Safeco Field has gained a reputation locally, regionally and nationally as a terrific setting for baseball and a great place for baseball fans. Sweeping views of Seattle's downtown skyline, breathtaking sunsets over Puget Sound, combined with excellent views of game action from all angles give fans at Safeco Field an experience unequalled in Major League Baseball. Safeco Field is located just south of Downtown Seattle . To the south is the "SODO District", home to a growing number of specialty retail businesses. To the east is the International District with its Asian restaurants and specialty shops. To the north is Pioneer Square, the original, historic "downtown" of Seattle. To the west reside the bustling Port of Seattle and the waterfront with restaurants and shops of all kinds. Many fans combine a trip to these wonderful locations with a day at the ballpark. A team store, picnic area, kids play area, on-site restaurant and a baseball museum are just a few of the fan amenities that make the ballpark a unique experience. There is also more variety in concessions and many more bathrooms! A two-level modern press box is located behind home plate. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held March 8, 1997 and the ballpark opened on July 15, 1999.
