SEATTLE LIFESTYLE
In keeping with the city's contradictory nature, the typical Seattle lifestyle
is decidedly casual on the outside but serious when it counts. People here,
famously, will stand and wait several minutes rather than cross a street against
the light; this was originally due to a harsh jaywalking law, but now it's just
habit. Working life seems similarly laidback. Suits are less common than khakis,
even in the business district; most people fall into that particularly Northwest
fashion niche of jeans, hiking boots and polar fleece (thanks, REI).
But the fact that they're wearing sneakers and denim shouldn't fool anyone
into thinking Seattleites aren't pulling long hours at intense, high-stress
jobs. A quick stroll through the Microsoft campus will put that suspicion to
rest. In high-tech jobs in the Northwest, people tend to burn out within a few
years.
If they work hard, they play hard too. Everyone in Seattle seems to go out all
the time, even if only for an after-work happy hour. Bars are more crowded on
Friday and Saturday nights but never really empty.
Seattle loves its microbrews - almost as much as it loves its coffee. A visitor
could be forgiven for wondering just who all these people are who are sitting in
coffee shops for hours in the middle of a workday.
The answer? They could be dot-com casualties, self-employed business
consultants, students, writers - whatever they are, they all seem to have
laptops with WiFi capability. |
